83. Perran Sands to Penzance

4 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After breakfast at our loft apartment in Penzance we dash to the bus station. Cornish bus drivers seem to be in no hurry to get anywhere. There are lots of us waiting, mostly heading to Flambards in Helston. Thankfully we are not on the bus long and are soon jumping off at this random crossroads on the main road, Wander down to Perranuthnoe - a little seaside village with a couple of cafes - one not open on Tuesdays and the other putting the finishing touches for the new season and hopefully opening for the season on Wednesday! It’s [...]

82. Porthleven to Perran Sands

10 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Breakfast at Doolittle before starting todays walk straight from here, leaving todays bus adventure for the end of the day. Starting up at the harbour, they are just setting up the market stalls for the Sunday traders and the bikers are arriving for their morning meet-up as we amble out of the village towards the cliff path. We pass the old lifeboat house, now an artists gallery, the really high set post box in the blue wall and the large newly converted dwelling that we observed yesterday. On closer inspection, although sympathetically constructed from local [...]

81. Poldhu Cove to Porthleven

6 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Enjoy a toasted tea cake and freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast at Dolittle, our holiday cottage in Porthleven. We catch the bus into Helston, change to the number 34 for Poldu. There’s a change of bus driver at Flambards theme park, the drivers have a long chat, making us well behind schedule, only to go a few metres round the corner to pick up an elderly lady who had been waiting patiently inches from the bus for maybe ten minutes! Leave the bus at Poldu, (Poldhu or Poldu? The signs all vary) where families are enjoying refreshments at [...]

80. Lizard Peninsula to Poldhu Cove

11 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . We’ve returned to Cornwall, now as grandparents and with a son-in-law. After a comfortable night at “Doolittle” in Porthleven we drive to Mullion and board the number 34 bus – Lizard bound. It’s very much a local’s bus, going round the houses, but after 24 stops, drops us at the green at the Lizard where we left off in November. Since then, the shops have been freshly painted and it seems much brighter place. It's a short meander down to Lizard point where we stop for breakfast sitting outside the Wavecrest café. We are the first punters [...]

79. Coverack to Lizard Peninsula

10.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Wake up at the Coverack Headland holiday apartment and decide to head from here rather than driving to our destination and taxi-ing back. But first we walk back to the village shop to where we left off yesterday to buy Danish pastries for breakfast. I’ve grabbed my Nordic walking poles as I have a feeling it’s going to be a tough one. The coastal path is well signposted from Coverack Headland and we are straight out into open countryside, admiring the cobwebs in the bare trees and soon looking back at the large apartment block on the [...]

78. Porthallow to Coverack

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After a night at The Five Pilchards and a battering of rain we wake up to clear blue skies over Porthallow Cove. Motor to our destination then taxi back and we are setting off by 10:30. Having pondered the map and read “Ruth’s Coastal Walk” we are pre-warned the first half of today’s walk is on roads and inland footpaths so we head out of Porthallow up the quiet road towards Porthoustock. The route takes us right through the Fat Apples Café and Wild Campsite which is closed for the month of November –it looks [...]

77. Helford to Porthallow

9 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Still feeling high on last night’s stunning sunset over the Fal Estuary and our mornings stroll through the gardens of Trebah we drive the 13 miles round the estuary to the little village of Helford. The car park, above the village, is thankfully free for the winter months – no scrabbling for cash or time on my phone trying to work an app. We follow the road down the hill to the quaint village with its whitewashed cottages, thatched roofs and the Shipwright Inn. A little wooden footbridge takes us over the inlet, down to the ferry [...]

76. Swanpool Beach to Helford Passage

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After enjoying a Cornish Breakfast at the Greenbank Hotel, overlooking the Falmouth Estuary as the sun pops its head up, we meet friends at the Helford Passage. We leave the car and motor back to Swanpool Beach and are soon ready for today’s coastal stroll. It’s lovely to have company for our walk today – our friends, Sarah and David, and Mr Sunshine 😊. We find the coast path behind the Hooked on the Rocks seafood restaurant – one to come back to someday. The path climbs away from Swanpool Beach, where we take the little detour [...]

75. Falmouth Quay to Swanpool Beach

4 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . We’ve wended our “long” way from home this morning, arriving tired but chuffed in time for afternoon cream tea at The Greenbank Hotel – our home for a couple of nights. Falmouth is a familiar seaside town, having taken the short hop, back in July, over here from St. Mawes on what felt like the choppiest day of the year. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and there is a vivid rainbow over the river - St. Mawes as clear as day on the other side of the estuary. Full of warm scones, jam and [...]
