137. West Usk Lighthouse to Cardiff Bay

12 Miles miles walked since starting ... After a second night in the lighthouse cottage perched on the sea wall, we wake to the sunrise over the estuary and the sound of a curlew calling.  We’re tempted to sit outside but the weather has other ideas as hailstones start to drop from the darkening clouds.  Thankfully by the time we’ve packed our bags and loaded them into the car the sun has re-appeared.  We are setting off on foot from here and coming back later to collect the car. At first the coast path follows the route of a water course just below the seawall. There’s a [...]

136. Newport to West Usk Lighthouse

5 Miles miles walked since starting ... We’ve slept well in a four-poster bed in the iconic dwelling sitting on the sea wall beside, and part of, the West Usk lighthouse.  The owner, and as it turns out, builder of the wood clad building, welcomed us warmly last night. We’ve worked out the best way to get back to Newport for todays walk is a taxi.  We decide not to ask him to drive the .7-mile pot-holed farmers track to the lighthouse so walk up (bizarrely, following the owner’s son in a Rolls Royce car) to the main road.  It’s a short drive and just £11.20 to [...]

135. Redwick to Newport

14 Miles miles walked since starting ... We breakfast, pack and leave Laurel Cottage to wander back through the hamlet of Redwick to make our way to the coast path.  A slight detour takes us into the 12th century church to see the baptistry pool, one remaining stained-glass window (after the rest were ruined by a stray WW11 bomb) and the mark of the Great Flood of 1606 – it’s crazy high.  After re-reading the South Wales coast path book last night I’ve realised that there is an easier way back to the coast – wish we’d known about Sea Street Lane yesterday, our boots wouldn’t be [...]

134. Chepstow to Redwick

15 Miles miles walked since starting ... After an overnight stay at our cosy holiday cottage in Redwick we drive to Chepstow, pay for two days parking and find our way to the start of the Wales Coast Path. It takes us a few minutes to set the tracking on the coast path app, then we take a few photos and set off. The first part of today’s walk involves re-tracing our steps from back in January.  I feel like I’m narrating the book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”, and yes, it is a beautiful day! “Uh-oh! Back through the subway, just a short one under [...]

133. Severn Beach to Chepstow

10 Miles miles walked since starting ... Another early morning alarm, then a wander through the pretty village of Clifton, including the delightful tree lined path through St. Andrews cemetery, to Clifton Down railway station.  Sainsbury’s is conveniently right beside the station, perfect to gather provisions, which today includes a bottle of bubbly to celebrate ten years of coast walking as well as crossing into Wales. Disembark at the end of the line and wander the short distance back to the Severn estuary. The weather couldn’t be more perfect for today’s walk – crisp and cold with clear blue skies, fading, ombre style to the [...]

132. Portishead to Severn Beach

11 Miles miles walked since starting ... Having travelled by train to Bristol on New Years Day we’ve spent the evening in Clifton at the Hotel du Vin with the finest view of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. We’ve set our alarms early and are crossing the Avon Gorge, before sunrise, to catch the 8:23 X4 bus to Portishead. It’s a fun journey on the top deck through the village of Pill, under the M5, through Sheepway back to the bus stop we left in Portishead four months back.  A quick visit to Waitrose for food provisions (there’s going to be no coffee shops, cosy pubs [...]

131. Clevedon to Portishead

7 Miles miles walked since starting ... Wake up to low-lying grey cloud cover in our little orchard on Dowlais Farm, with the sound and thud of apples dropping on canvas.  It’s time to get up and enjoy our last walk of the holiday. It’s a short drive into Clevedon to find street parking, along the elegant red bricks and wander back towards the pier.  The signpost says just 6 miles to Portishead.  Follow the ornate railings to the pier which today we are too early for opening time! The coast path follows the road behind the houses with the sea view then swiftly down a path [...]

130. Weston-Super-Mare to Clevedon

8.5 Miles miles walked since starting ... After two very full days of walking we gift ourselves a lazy start this morning.  A fresh sourdough from a local bakery goes down nicely with a cheesy omelette and home-made plum jam from our campsite. Despite the bus timetables changing overnight we don’t wait long for a bus from Clevedon back to Worle Station, but the timetable goes out the window when we hit a traffic jam on the M5. We re-trace our tracks on foot through a residential district of Weston-Super-Mare to where we left off yesterday, setting off from Ebdon early afternoon. Today’s walk is [...]

129. Brean to Weston-Super-Mare

11 Miles miles walked since starting ... We’ve opted to park our car “before 9” for an early bird ticket at the NCP in the centre of Weston-Super-Mare.  We then catch the number 20 bus (although very nearly miss it while talking to a young seagull looking for food) from the interchange back to Brean Village Hall, where we finished off yesterday. It’s a well-trodden footpath / cycle route alongside the road to the Diamond Farm campsite.  Just before the campsite in a little farm courtyard is the rather smart looking Café 33 where Nigel buys a coffee and I opt not get a drink. It’s funny [...]

128. Highbridge to Brean

13 Miles miles walked since starting ... We motored to Somerset yesterday and pitched our tent in an orchard at a tiny “Green” campsite jut outside Clevedon. There’s rain forecast from midday so we’re up early and parked up in Highbridge and ready to go before 9am.  Wander between the river and the houses to Highbridge Clyce where we crossed back in May.  The coast path signs take us down an extremely narrow alleyway which gets more and more unkempt as we go but finally emerges by the river Brue just before it reaches the river Parrett and Bridgwater Bay. It's a busy towpath this [...]
