78. Porthallow to Coverack

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After a night at The Five Pilchards and a battering of rain we wake up to clear blue skies over Porthallow Cove. Motor to our destination then taxi back and we are setting off by 10:30. Having pondered the map and read “Ruth’s Coastal Walk” we are pre-warned the first half of today’s walk is on roads and inland footpaths so we head out of Porthallow up the quiet road towards Porthoustock. The route takes us right through the Fat Apples Café and Wild Campsite which is closed for the month of November –it looks like it would be [...]

77. Helford to Porthallow

9 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Still feeling high on last night’s stunning sunset over the Fal Estuary and our mornings stroll through the gardens of Trebah we drive the 13 miles round the estuary to the little village of Helford. The car park, above the village, is thankfully free for the winter months – no scrabbling for cash or time on my phone trying to work an app. We follow the road down the hill to the quaint village with its whitewashed cottages, thatched roofs and the Shipwright Inn. A little wooden footbridge takes us over the inlet, down to the ferry point. On [...]

76. Swanpool Beach to Helford Passage

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After enjoying a Cornish Breakfast at the Greenbank Hotel, overlooking the Falmouth Estuary as the sun pops its head up, we meet friends at the Helford Passage. Leaving a car then and motoring back to Swanpool Beach we are soon ready for today’s coastal stroll. It’s lovely to have company for our walk today – our friends and Mr Sunshine 😊. We find the coast path up behind the Hooked on the Rocks seafood restaurant – one to come back to someday. The path climbs away from Swanpool Beach, where we take the little detour down to Pennance Point [...]

75. Falmouth Quay to Swanpool Beach

4 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Having taken the short hop over to Falmouth from St. Mawes on what felt like the choppiest day of the year, back in July, Falmouth a familiar seaside town. We’ve wended our “long” way from home this morning, arriving tired but chuffed in time for afternoon cream tea at The Greenbank Hotel – our home for a couple of nights. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and there is a vivid rainbow over the river - St. Mawes as clear as day on the other side of the estuary. Full of warm scones, jam and clotted cream [...]

72. Pentewan Sands to Porthluney Cove

11 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . It’s a short bus ride, via Mevagissey, from our campsite to Pentewan Sands then a short walk down through the village to the coast but we struggle to find our way across the water inlet to the main beach and the coast path – the little bridge very well hidden! It’s a beautiful sandy beach but the caravan park dominates– you wouldn’t visit the beach if you weren’t staying. With a distinct lack of signs for the coast path we meander through the static caravans - this is a sister property to where we are staying and couldn’t be [...]

71. Par Sands to Pentewan Sands

9 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . It’s the night after England’s semi-final at Euro 2020 – so everyone is smiling. The number 24 bus which picks us up right outside our incredible campsite at Heligan takes an hour to get to Par. It goes round the houses, literally, and I feel sick from breathing in my own breath in a face mask. However, the lady’s discussion behind makes up for it - her best comment after coming off the phone to a relative in Australia was “do you think he watched the football before us or after us?” ha-ha… Take a deep breath as at [...]

70. Fowey to Par Sands

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . We’ve driven down to Cornwall early this morning through heavy rain for a week’s holiday. By early afternoon we’ve pitched our tent at Heligan campsite and motored back to Fowey to start walking. It’s four in the afternoon by the time we arrive. It’s funny how Fowey is so familiar after our stay here back in April when the sun shone every day and it was pretty quiet of visitors. We dodge the tourists (ha-ha we’re not tourists) who are queuing outside the chocolate shop and sitting outside cafes and bars; we head straight to the pasty shop to [...]

69. Polperro to Fowey

8 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . We’ve enjoyed a couple of nights in Fowey. A well-earned break yesterday with a trip to the beach and a swim (a bit cold in April), watched Prince Phillips funeral (very moving), then a take away pizza and ice creams (very tasty). The alarm is set early to catch the first ferry across to Polruan, with the buses only running on week days we’ve booked a taxi to take us back to Polperro. The taxi driver is pleased for the business – 2021 hasn’t been good for business and 2020, by all accounts, brought many people to Cornwall who [...]
