43. Charmouth to Lyme Regis

2.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After a rainy night under canvas, sharing a shower with a spider we enjoy a delicious full English breakfast in Lyme Regis. Chat to the nice lady in the tourist information who advises us it is safe to walk along the beach between Charmouth and Lyme Regis at low tide. We take the bus to Charmouth and wander down from the town to the beach. The weather is dire, considering its midsummer - drizzling rain and a bit of a breeze, but we are dressed for the occasion. We’re not sure if the tide is out far enough yet [...]

42. Seatown to Charmouth

4 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Wow, wake up to appreciate another one of the amazing design features of the shepherd’s hut - the cut-out tree in the shutters above our bed creates a beautiful pattern on the wall when the sun shines! Yippee the sun is shining. Sadly, we’ve had to miss a days walking. There was torrential rain yesterday and it seemed a shame to walk Golden Cap in miserable weather so we took a day out. But now it is time to leave West Bexington behind. Park up at Seatown and find the pathway just behind some cottages. I’m at first apprehensive [...]

41. West Bay to Seatown

3 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Wake up in our little shepherd’s hut by the beach in West Bexington. First things first we put the bed back in the wall and reveal the table and seats for breakfast. Homemade granola, local yogurt, and homemade preserves provided by our host. The weather isn’t brilliant but we set out to Seatown, just down from Chideock.. I feel I should recognise it from my childhood but I only remember the holiday home by the pub in Chideock. The lady cab driver is extremely chatty, telling us about moving down here forty years ago, house prices etc. At West [...]

40. Burton Bradstock to West Bay

2.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After near on a four-hour drive, we check into our shepherd’s hut in West Bexington before heading to West Bay to catch a cab back to Burton Bradstock. With the rain dripping on the windscreen, we nearly turn back to the comfort of our hut! Head up the hill behind the Hive Beach Cafe and along the path between the cliff top and the farmers’ fields enjoying the view of the little hamlets nestled in the rolling hills divided up by the straight lines of the dry stone walls. The path descends steeply to Freshwater Beach. Here stands an [...]

39. Abbotsbury to Burton Bradstock

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After a comfortable night and a big breakfast at the Ilchester Arms in Abbotsbury we head off up the hill to the little chapel before finding the coast path and the sea. The path joins at the very end of Chesil Beach where we admire the view back towards the Isle of Portland - the first part of the walk is mostly on the shingle and quite hard going. We come to a little car park below Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens where there is a little board walk heading out to the sea. The pathway runs just inside the beach [...]

38. Ferry Bridge, Chesil Beach to Abbotsbury

11 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After a four hour drive we check in at the Ilchester Arms, Abbotsbury, grab a pasty in a local cafe and catch a taxi back to Ferry Bridge. According to the cab driver the Ferry Bridge pub has been closed for many years, oh well, if I win the lottery.. Munching on our pasties we settle into a rhythm walking, not with the sea to our left, but hugging the edge of the Fleet Lagoon – the large stretch of brackish water between us and Chesil Beach. Oh my there are a lot of pill boxes along this stretch [...]

37. Fortuneswell to Ferry Bridge, Chesil Beach

2 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Breakfast at the Crows Nest before we head out for an early morning New Years Day walk. Cannot believe it the weatherman has got it oh so wrong - 2019 is starting off with a glorious sunny day. Picking up where we left off after our yummy meal at the Cove House Inn, we finish walking along the promenade and descend to the beach below. Chesil Beach is a mere 18 miles long – owned by The Crown, Ilchester Estate and the National Trust. Pedestrians are discouraged and often restricted from walking the whole length of the beach due [...]

36. Church Ope Cove to Fortuneswell (Portland)

8.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . The local bus takes us back to Easton where we re-trace our steps to Church Ope Cove – oh my what a pretty little cove with oh so many cute beach huts all shut up for the winter. We skim a pebble or two then continue along the South West Coast Path. The walk takes us through disused quarries, skirting the edge of Southwell. Remnants of quarried stone blocks along with disused cranes have us wondering of how this area must have been maybe 100 years ago. We take some time pondering over the workings of the wooden crane [...]

35. Weymouth to Church Ope Cove (Portland)

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Having parked at our holiday cottage on the Isle of Portland we catch the bus back to the mainland and re-trace our steps to Sandsfoot Castle cafe. We taste their pasties again, admire the view from the castle then cross the road and join the Rodwell Trail. Seventy years ago steam trains chuffed along this route from Weymouth to Portland. Today it is a buzz with dog walkers, cyclists, runners and us enjoying the stroll and the views across the harbour. A small estate of houses at the end of the trail lies on the site of the former [...]

34. Osmington Mills to Weymouth

6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Breakfast at the Smugglers Inn sets us up for today’s stroll towards Weymouth. We find the coast path a little way out of the village and head up the steps to the cliff top where the path takes us inland around the large undercliff area.. All along this walk there is evidence of the ever-changing coastline with massive cracks in the land suggesting imminent cliff falls, we stay well clear of the edge! We spot a white horse on the cliff –which are later informed by our taxi driver is riden by King George... The path skirts around a [...]
