5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . It’s a fair hike re-tracing our steps from last night, past the cows grazing in the fields and the adders breeding in their long grass, to Gwynver Beach. The sea is as blue, the sand as smooth and clean but, being a Monday, is somewhat quieter than yesterday. 8 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Thankfully a slightly easier walk than yesterday, but equally as long. Today we are reaching a massive milestone, hence I am carrying a special bottle in my back pack to celebrate. We start with a wander down the road from our holiday cottage to the Sennon Cove Camping and Caravanning site. The bus is running at Cornish time, but nevertheless arrives. An absolutely stunning, yet tough, coastal walk, the weather the best that July in England can offer, with few settlements yet bookended by amazing wildlife sightings. In fact, two of which are a first for me. We’ve stayed overnight in a farmhouse cottage call Brae Barn cottage, not far from Land’s End. We have certainly struck lucky with this Airbnb. We have a fun morning splashing and relaxing in the Jubilee Pool, which I highly recommend – well the geothermal pool, we weren’t tempted by the other much colder pool! Followed by a mooch around the little shops in Chapel Street - love the plant shop and cute little gift shop, we will return to spend money, but for now we are continuing our coast walk. 4 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After breakfast at our loft apartment in Penzance we dash to the bus station. Cornish bus drivers seem to be in no hurry to get anywhere. There are lots of us waiting, mostly heading to Flambards in Helston. Thankfully we are not on the bus long and are soon jumping off at this random crossroads on the main road, Wander down to Perranuthnoe - a little seaside village with a couple of cafes - one not open on Tuesdays and the other putting the finishing touches for the new season and hopefully opening for the season on Wednesday! 10 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Breakfast at Doolittle before starting todays walk straight from here, leaving todays bus adventure for the end of the day. Starting up at the harbour, they are just setting up the market stalls for the Sunday traders and the bikers are arriving for their morning meet-up as we amble out of the village towards the cliff path. 6 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Enjoy a toasted tea cake and freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast at Dolittle, our holiday cottage in Porthleven. We catch the bus into Helston, change to the number 34 for Poldu. There’s a change of bus driver at Flambards theme park, the drivers have a long chat, making us well behind schedule, only to go a few metres round the corner to pick up an elderly lady who had been waiting patiently inches from the bus for maybe ten minutes! 11 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . We’ve returned to Cornwall, now as grandparents and with a son-in-law. After a comfortable night at “Doolittle” in Porthleven we drive to Mullion and board the number 34 bus – Lizard bound. It’s very much a local’s bus, going round the houses, but after 24 stops, drops us at the green at the Lizard where we left off in November. Since then, the shops have been freshly painted and it seems much brighter place. It's a short meander down to Lizard point where we stop for breakfast sitting outside the Wavecrest café. 10.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . Wake up at the Coverack Headland holiday apartment and decide to head from here rather than driving to our destination and taxi-ing back. But first we walk back to the village shop to where we left off yesterday to buy Danish pastries for breakfast. I’ve grabbed my Nordic walking poles as I have a feeling it’s going to be a tough one. 6.5 Miles Miles walked since starting. . . After a night at The Five Pilchards and a battering of rain we wake up to clear blue skies over Porthallow Cove. Motor to our destination then taxi back and we are setting off by 10:30. Having pondered the map and read “Ruth’s Coastal Walk” we are pre-warned the first half of today’s walk is on roads and inland footpaths so we head out of Porthallow up the quiet road towards Porthoustock.
